Inside are some USB ports where the owner of the purse can simply connect their gadgets and there goes the power. And it does not matter if it would be a mobile phone, an iPod, or whatever gadget she may have.

Shoppers in the UK have queued for hours for a new designer bag that is on sale for just £5.

“The new eco-friendly carrier bags went on sale in Anya Hindmarch stores across Britain as part of a bid by the designer to encourage shoppers to use fewer plastic bags when shopping.”

An example is the Grippa project initiated in 2004. The aim was to create ‘anti bag theft furniture’ and ‘anti bag theft furniture accessories’ for bar and restaurant environments and test those for effectiveness in reducing theft as well as avoiding forgotten or abandoned bags which leads to a safer and cleaner environment.

The Daily Mail reported on the increase in popularity of designer handbags. Selfridges reports that the average price of its designer bags is now £850 which is up 55 per cent since 2005.

A remarkable story about a woman who was attacked during the theft of her handbag.

A journalist who suffered serious facial injuries during a late night city centre assault has been allowed home.

Christine Harle, a sub-editor with The Journal, is recovering well after undergoing reconstructive face surgery at Newcastle General Hospital.

She was attacked as she left work at 1.20am on January 11, and had her handbag stolen.

Leather handbags that retail for about £1,000 and purses at £200 were stolen from a lorry parked on the Burnt Mills estate at Basildon overnight Sunday, January 14 and Monday, January 15, 2007. The bags are ‘Marc Jacobs’ brand and are usually sold through stores at the top end of the London market.
If you are offered a bag at a knock down price or know anything about the theft then call police at Basildon on 01268 532212 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Retford supermarket Morrisons has teamed up with the police to raise awareness of handbag security to its customers.

On Thursday 25 January 2007, between 11am and 12.30pm, advice leaflets and purse bells will be handed out to customers in the store on Idle Valley Road.

  • Do not place your purse on top of the counter when paying for goods. Keep it firmly in your hand.
  • Do not keep your PIN with your credit card.
  • Keep your hand bag closed and with you all the time.
  • Do not leave purses on top of your shopping bags.
  • Do not leave valuables or a purse unattended on a shopping trolley or on the basket of an electric scooter.
  • Pay attention to who is around you. Don’t be an easy target for criminals.

Demand for luxury handbags helped fashion retailer Burberry report a 25% rise in underlying revenues in the final quarter of last year. Sales at stores were up 13%. Bestsellers included the £750 Manor Handbag carried by supermodel Kate Mosss in a recent advertising campaign.

Insurers are urging women to get their handbags covered and protect themselves against thieves.

One if five women in the UK have either lost their handbag or had it stolen. Research by Cornhill Direct shows that the average handbag on the nation’s high streets is worth £48.

One in five British women report that they have either lost or had their handbag stolen and with the average value of a handbag and its contents estimated at £300, leading insurer Cornhill Direct is reminding women just how vulnerable their handbags can be.

In a survey of 3,000 women commissioned by the insurer, one in ten women said they had needed to take action to prevent their handbag from being stolen, with opportunist thieves eager to get their hands on a goldmine of goodies.

According to the research, the average handbag on the nation’s high streets is worth £48, with 20 per cent of women saying they had opted to buy a designer label.
