Free 'Purse chains' are helping to reduce handbag crime

Headingley Shop Watch has called upon local residents to help ‘bag” thieves as they issue shoppers with ‘purse chains’ throughout the area after a series of thefts have been reported.
Headingley Shop Watch is a scheme set up to improve safety in the area for local residents and shoppers. The scheme brings together retailers, volunteers and Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) to drive down crime.
Over twenty retail outlets are involved in the scheme and support each other by sharing information through a ring round scheme. Each retailer is given a maximum of three phone numbers to call to inform other traders as quickly as possible if a shoplifter is operating in the area.
This week the scheme is focusing on purse dippers after a spate of incidents in the area. Local residents have been invited to Shop Watch events to receive advice on how to protect themselves from thieves. PCSOs have issued free purse chains to secure people purses firmly to their belts or bags to avoid them being targeted by purse dippers.
Police are also warning shoppers to be extra vigilant and keep their bags in their possession at all times. The free purse chains which has a clip at each end, allowing shoppers to attach their purse to either their bag or belt as an extra security measure.
